Safe Sleep Position
ABC's of safe sleep: Alone, on Back, in Crib
Safe sleep essentials:
- Firm, flat surface with fitted sheet only
- No blankets, pillows, bumpers, or toys
- Room-share but not bed-share (first 6-12 months)
- Don't overheat — dress in light layers
- Never cover baby's head
These practices significantly reduce SIDS risk.
What to Do
- Always place baby on back to sleep (back sleep reduces SIDS risk by 50%)
- Use firm mattress with tight-fitting sheet - no soft surfaces like couches or adult beds
- Remove ALL items from sleep space: no blankets, pillows, bumpers, stuffed animals
- Use sleep sack or wearable blanket instead of loose blankets
- Keep room temperature 68-72°F - baby should feel warm but not hot
- Room-share for first 6-12 months - keep crib/bassinet in your room
- Offer pacifier at sleep time (reduces SIDS risk)
- Breastfeed if possible (reduces SIDS risk)
- NO bed-sharing, especially if parent smokes, drinks alcohol, takes medications, or is overtired
- If baby falls asleep in car seat/swing, move to flat safe surface as soon as possible
