Dream Feed Strategy
Dream feed: Feeding baby while they're still asleep (or barely awake) around 10-11pm before parents go to bed. Goal is to tank baby up so they sleep longer stretch without waking hungry.
Works for some babies 6 weeks to 6-7 months. May help baby sleep from 11pm to 5-6am instead of waking at 2-3am. Not a magic solution - some babies wake anyway, some wake more frequently after dream feed.
Best for babies who wake consistently hungry after a few hours. Less effective once baby starts sleeping through night naturally.
What to Do
- Time it 2-3 hours after baby's last feeding (usually 10-11pm before you sleep)
- Keep lights dim and environment quiet
- Gently pick up baby - don't fully wake them
- Offer breast or bottle - many babies will eat while barely conscious
- Burp gently if needed, then put back to bed without full wake-up
- No diaper change unless absolutely necessary (keeps baby sleepy)
- Don't do dream feed if baby is already sleeping through night
- Expect 4-6 hour stretch after dream feed (not all night)
- Phase out around 6-9 months when baby eating more solids
- Watch baby's cues - if dream feed disrupts sleep, stop it
