Nap Transitions (Dropping Naps)
Babies go through several nap transitions in first 2 years: 4→3 naps (~4 months), 3→2 naps (~6-9 months), 2→1 nap (~12-18 months).
Signs ready to drop nap: Refuses one nap consistently, takes forever to fall asleep for naps, naps become very short, nighttime sleep disrupted, not tired at nap time.
Transitions are gradual - takes 2-3 weeks of adjustment. Expect some crankiness and schedule chaos during transition period.
What to Do
- Watch for transition signs: fighting naps, disrupted night sleep, not tired at nap time
- 4 to 3 naps (~4 months): Drop late afternoon catnap, move bedtime earlier temporarily
- 3 to 2 naps (~6-9 months): Drop morning nap, keep mid-morning and afternoon naps
- 2 to 1 nap (~12-18 months): Keep midday nap, drop morning nap gradually
- During transition: May need to adjust nap times and bedtime
- Offer earlier bedtime during transition to prevent overtiredness
- Be flexible - some days may need old schedule, some days new schedule
- Don't rush transitions - baby should show consistent signs for 1-2 weeks
- If baby seems miserable, may have transitioned too early - go back to old schedule
- Transitions can take 2-4 weeks to fully settle into new pattern
