Vision Development
Newborns see clearly about 8-12 inches away (perfect for seeing parent's face while feeding). Vision develops rapidly in first year.
Milestones: Tracking objects (2 months), recognizing familiar faces (3 months), depth perception (5 months), full color vision (7 months), seeing across room clearly (12 months).
Babies are naturally drawn to high-contrast patterns, faces, and movement.
What to Do
- Get close (8-12 inches) so newborn can see your face clearly while feeding
- Use high-contrast toys and books (black/white patterns) for young babies
- Hang mobile or toys within view but out of reach (18-24 inches from face)
- Get doctor to check eyes at every well visit
- Protect eyes from bright sunlight - use hat or shade on stroller
- Watch for signs of vision problems: constant tearing, extreme light sensitivity, eyes always crossed
- If family history of vision problems, inform pediatrician
