Babbling & Early Speech
Speech development: Cooing (2-3 months), laughing (3-4 months), babbling single sounds "ba ba" (4-6 months), babbling with variety "ba da ma" (6-9 months), first words around 12 months.
Babbling is practice for real words! Babies experiment with sounds and learn language rules by listening and repeating.
Responding to baby's sounds encourages more talking. Have 'conversations' by mimicking sounds back.
What to Do
- Talk to baby constantly - narrate your day ("Now we're changing your diaper")
- Respond to baby's sounds - have 'conversations' by taking turns making sounds
- Read books every day - even young babies benefit from hearing words and seeing pictures
- Sing songs and nursery rhymes - repetition and rhythm help language development
- Make eye contact when talking - helps baby connect sounds to meaning
- Name objects as you use them - "Here's your bottle" "Let's put on your socks"
- Limit screen time (AAP recommends none under 18 months) - real interaction is crucial
