Tummy Time
Start tummy time from day 1! Place baby on tummy on firm surface for short periods while awake. Builds neck, shoulder, and core strength needed for rolling, crawling, sitting.
Start with 2-3 minutes, 2-3 times per day. Gradually increase to 15-30 minutes total by 3 months. By 4-6 months, baby should tolerate longer periods.
Many babies hate tummy time at first - normal! Keep trying. It gets easier as they get stronger.
What to Do
- Start from birth - place on your chest or lap for first few weeks
- Do tummy time when baby is alert and happy (not right after eating)
- Get down at baby's level - make eye contact, talk, sing
- Place interesting toys just out of reach to encourage reaching
- If baby fusses: Start with 1-2 minutes and gradually increase
- Do tummy time 3-5 times daily for short bursts rather than one long session
- Never leave baby unattended during tummy time
- Always put baby on BACK for sleep (tummy time is for awake time only)
