What to Do
- Call doctor for evaluation - they'll determine if viral, bacterial, or allergic
- Clean eyes gently with warm water on soft cloth (wipe from inner to outer corner)
- Use separate cloth for each eye to prevent spreading infection
- If doctor prescribes antibiotic eye drops: Give full course even if eyes look better
- Wash hands before and after touching baby's eyes
- Change pillowcases daily
- Don't share towels or washcloths
- For bacterial pink eye: Baby can return to daycare 24 hours after starting antibiotics
- For viral pink eye: Keep home until discharge is gone (usually 3-7 days)
- DO NOT use leftover eye drops from previous infection
- Prevent spread: Wash hands frequently, don't touch eyes, wash toys
