Colds & Congestion
Babies get 6-10 colds in first year as immune system develops. Symptoms: runny/stuffy nose, sneezing, mild cough, low fever (<102°F), fussiness, trouble sleeping.
Colds are viral - antibiotics won't help. Most resolve in 7-10 days. NO cold medications for babies under 2 years (dangerous side effects).
Congestion makes feeding difficult since babies can't breathe through mouth while nursing.
What to Do
- Use saline nose drops or spray before feedings and sleep
- Suction nose gently with bulb syringe or NoseFrida after saline
- Run cool-mist humidifier in baby's room (clean daily to prevent mold)
- Elevate head of crib/bassinet slightly by putting books under legs (never use pillows)
- Offer extra fluids (breast milk/formula) to prevent dehydration
- Give fever reducer (acetaminophen 3+ months, ibuprofen 6+ months) if uncomfortable
- Try steamy bathroom (run hot shower) for 10-15 minutes to loosen mucus
- Feed smaller amounts more frequently if congestion makes eating hard
- DO NOT use cold/cough medicines, Vicks, or essential oils on babies
- Wash hands frequently and keep baby away from sick people when possible
