Introducing Allergenic Foods
NEW guidance: Introduce common allergens EARLY (around 6 months) to reduce allergy risk. Common allergens: peanuts, eggs, milk, soy, wheat, tree nuts, fish, shellfish.
Introduce one allergen at a time, in small amount, at home (not restaurant/daycare). Wait 3-5 days before next allergen.
For peanuts: Mix smooth peanut butter with puree (never whole peanuts under 4 years).
What to Do
- Introduce allergens around 6 months, not later (delays may increase allergy risk)
- Give first taste at home when well-rested, not when baby is sick
- Start with small amount (1/4 teaspoon) and watch for 2 hours
- If no reaction, gradually increase amount over next few days
- For peanuts: Mix 2 teaspoons smooth peanut butter with puree or breast milk
- Continue giving allergen 2-3 times per week once introduced (don't stop)
- Have Benadryl available but call doctor before giving for reaction
- Babies with severe eczema or egg allergy should see allergist first
