Constipation in Babies
Constipation = hard, dry, pellet-like stools that are difficult/painful to pass. NOT just infrequent pooping.
Breastfed babies can go 7-10 days without pooping and be totally fine (after 6 weeks). Formula-fed babies usually go daily but may go 2-3 days.
True constipation signs: hard pellets, straining with crying, blood from hard stool, hard belly, decreased appetite.
Most common cause: starting solids or formula change.
What to Do
- For breastfed babies: infrequent pooping is often normal, not constipation
- True constipation = hard, painful stools (not just going days without pooping)
- If on formula: Try offering more water between feeds (2-4 oz for babies 4+ months)
- Bicycle legs exercise: Gently move baby's legs in cycling motion
- Warm bath can help baby relax and poop
- For babies eating solids: Offer prune, pear, or peach puree (natural laxatives)
- Reduce constipating foods: bananas, rice cereal, applesauce
- DO NOT give adult laxatives, suppositories, or enemas without doctor approval
- Call doctor if home remedies don't work in 24 hours - may need glycerin suppository
- Prevent: Adequate fluids, fiber-rich foods when on solids (prunes, pears, oatmeal)
