Sun Protection for Babies
Baby skin is extremely sensitive to sun damage. Babies under 6 months should AVOID direct sunlight - stay in shade.
Even brief sun exposure can cause sunburn in babies. Sunburn increases skin cancer risk later in life.
Sunscreen OK for babies 6+ months. For younger babies, sun avoidance and protective clothing are key.
UV rays strongest 10am-4pm - avoid outdoor activities during these hours when possible.
What to Do
- Under 6 months: Keep out of direct sunlight completely - stay in shade
- Use stroller with canopy, umbrella, or sun tent for shade
- Dress baby in lightweight long sleeves, long pants, and wide-brimmed hat
- Choose tightly woven fabrics or clothing with UPF 50+ sun protection
- Keep baby in shade especially during peak hours (10am-4pm)
- For 6+ months: Apply baby-safe sunscreen SPF 30-50 (mineral: zinc oxide or titanium dioxide)
- Apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before going outside, reapply every 2 hours
- Apply sunscreen generously - don't forget ears, hands, feet, back of neck
- Watch for overheating - babies can't regulate temperature well
